Adaland Mansion is pleased to announce its New Year’s Eve Buffet Dinner menu created especially for Adaland’s diners by guest Chef Jay Mahoney CEC, AAC. Chef Mahoney brings with him an impressive resume beginning with being a graduate of The Greenbrier Culinary Apprenticeship Program in 1983, receiving certification as Certified Executive Chef since 1992, and holding that certification currently.
Besides the mouthwatering foods prepared by Chef Mahoney, guests will be treated to live music by guitarist John Vaughn and flutist Katy McClane and a complimentary glass of champagne.

Chef Mahoney will begin the buffet with a salad composed of mixed greens, shaved fennel, pomegranate vinaigrette, and walnuts. He’ll serve Focaccia along with the salad course.
Guests are certain to be delighted with the two entries for this buffet, a carved bourbon molasses glazed pork loin and poached Atlantic salmon on tender greens with a citrus-olive oil sauce. Herb roasted root vegetables including parsnips, celery root, butternut squash, mushrooms, and Brussels sprouts along with the visually appealing and delicious tasting Hasselback potatoes make up the meal’s side vegetables.Topping off the New Year’s Eve buffet dinner are two desserts, an espresso chocolate chip angel food cake with hot fudge rum sauce and apple dumplings and almond sauce with vanilla sauce.

The buffet dinner features a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Adaland’s own cook of 13 years, Lucy Williamson, prepares a buffet table spread with seasonal delectables including ham, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and other vegetables, salad with Lucy’s secret dressing, homemade rolls warm from the oven, a dessert table heavy with pies and cakes of the season, and Adaland’s signature peach iced tea.
When guests enter the formal dining room to serve themselves from the long dining table, red cardinals peeping out from over the mantel will greet them.
Adaland Offers Santa’s Bake Shop With Homemade Cookies to Order
The scent of freshly baked cookies filled the rooms of Adaland Mansion during Adaland’s Christmas Open House.
A new aspect of the annual open house was Santa’s Bake Shop featuring Christmas cookies baked for the occasion by Adaland Board member Jeannie Mozley. Guests were offered a free cookie, a cup of coffee, or hot tea while they visited the 23 room 1870 restored home.
Guests ordered cookies by the dozen or a tray of three dozen cookies. Ordered cookies were picked up at the December Open House.
Adaland Mansion IS ready to welcome guests
for the holiday season.
Adaland has been using the della robbia theme at its entry for many years, joining in a custom made popular by Colonial Williamsburg during the 1930s. At this time in history, Christmas decorating was growing in significance and the practice of affixing fruits, vegetables, dried flowers, herbs, and other plant life to basic Christmas decorations like wreaths, swags, and garlands was one of the decorating techniques that grew in popularity. Visitors to Adaland are invited to tour the house and to enjoy all the Christmas decorations on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm when public events are not being held.
Holiday Specialty Teas Await Guests At Adaland Mansion
When guests to the Holiday High Tea and Royal Tea enter Adaland Mansion, they are greeted by green garlands draping doors and mantels, red velvet bows perched on the black walnut railing ascending to the second floor, and Christmas trees in nearly all the rooms at Adaland, each tree with its own decorating theme.
Guests at last year’s Holiday Specialty Tea, shown right, are in the midst of the Christmas finery that has become synonymous with Adaland at Christmas time. Make your reservations to enjoy the holiday decorations, the charming Adaland ambiance, and the always delicious tea finger foods that mark all the specialty teas.

Chef Geoff Krauss and his business partner Dwayne Metz are pictured in their Weston restaurant, Thyme Bistro. Chef Krauss is Adaland Mansion’s last guest chef for the fourth season of Celebrate Local!, Adaland’s farm-to-table celebration.
Chef Krauss prepared a special four-course dinner. His menu began with roasted butternut squash and apple bisque with ginger brandy cream. Next, guests were treated to autumn greens with poached pear, candied walnuts, and sesame raisin vinaigrette. Taking center stage for the meal was slow braised beef short ribs with polenta and oven roasted carrots. Chef Geoff topped off the dinner with a pumpkin crème brulee.
House tours take top billing DURING THE FALL SEASON
Adaland Mansion at Philippi ushers in the fall season with the foliage colors to match the entrance walkway to the 1870 restored Neo-Greek home that sits on a hilltop four miles north of downtown Philippi.
House tours take top billing for the next few weeks with the house open for tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11:00 pm to 5:00 pm and then on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm unless a private event has secured the home. Guests are advised to call 304-457-1587 or 304-516-1124 to make sure the house is open before driving any distance. Adult admission for house tours is $10. Children are free when accompanying an adult.
Chef Dale Hawkins returned to Adaland for his fourth year as part of the
farm-to-table dinner series, Celebrate Local!
The annual dinner series has become one of Adaland’s best-attended events as it spotlights both local foods and the extraordinary chefs who prepare them. Adaland Mansion is proud that it was among the early presenters of this movement that emphasizes the use of locally sourced foods. And Hawkins has been one of WV’s strong advocates of the farm-to-table initiative.
His menu appealled to everyone who likes good food. It began with an arugula salad with watermelon, feta cheese, and balsamic glaze with toasted nuts. The main course consisted of Tuscan roasted chicken, buttery whipped potatoes, summer roasted vegetables, and focaccia bread. Diners were also treated to an apple tart with shortbread crust drizzled with caramel.
Adaland Mansion Appeals to the Senses

Country Music Day at Adaland features a wide variety of genres of live music on the side yard pavilion. Entertainers have included: Vali Davis; Jay McCung; The Moatsville Boys; Marissa Mallow, Jamie and Daniel Kittle. Rick Cleavenger and Friends, area blue grass afficionados, are shown sharing their musical talents.
The music on the pavilion is free and open to all music lovers and those who just want to enjoy a beautiful fall afternoon at the 1870 restored Neo Greek home. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic lunches, or they may reserve a BBQ lunch.

Adaland Mansion’s annual Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
“Music, Murder and Mayham” is the story about a murder, a cast of odd and suspicious characters, and an opportunity for the audience to interrogate the murder suspects and then vote upon “who dunit?” The play introduces Gene Sharp and The Meringues, a pop chart singing group, and Gene’s entourage made up of people who just don’t like him.
The evening on Adaland’s side yard pavilion begins with a buffet dinner prepared by Adaland’s veteran cook, Lucy Williamson. After dinner, local and area actors will have audience members snickering and guffawing as they watch the action unfold.

Chef Fleck comes to Adaland Mansion after taking away four major awards from his first professional level competition. The 11th annual Cast Iron Cook Off was held last winter in Charleston and sponsored by the Collaborative for the 21st Century Appalachia. The Collaborative highlights the farm to table movement which is the basis of Adaland’s Celebrate Local! Dinner Series.
The first mouth-watering course of Chef Fleck’s Adaland menu was named the “Best Overall Dish/Single Course” at the 2016 Cast Iron Cook Off.

Blue & Gray Tea
Adaland Mansion at Philippi hosts the Blue & Gray Tea as part of the Blue & Gray Reunion in Philippi. The annual June event draws reenactors in Civil War era attire and also those who love teas and enjoy seeing all the period clothing.
Pictured above are four reenactors in period garb from a previous year including Doretta Brown, Lindsay Bracey Goudy, and Kelly Bracey all of whom are reenactors with the Barbour Greys, a Barbour County Confederate Army Unit during the Civil War.

Wondering what to do for your mother, your grandmother, your wife, or that special someone to make your Mother’s Day celebration extra special?
Adaland’s serves an annual Mother’s Day Buffet Dinner. Guests for this day are treated to the mouthwatering down home cooking of Adaland’s long time cook, Lucy Williamson. The buffet table will be laden with two entrees, a collection of sides, salad with Lucy’s famous dressing, homemade bread, and a sideboard of luscious desserts. Adaland’s signature peach iced tea and coffee round out the afternoon meal that has become a favorite of many visitors.
A Celebration of Weddings
An annual April gathering of local vendors and bridal couples. Come out to the house on the hill four miles north of downtown Philippi and visit wedding service vendors from around the area ready to help with your wedding! Couples who have already booked a wedding at Adaland are invited to the day along with their wedding party and family. The public is also invited to visit the house, the grounds, the side yard pavilion, and to talk with the wedding service vendors to explore a future wedding at Adaland.

Adaland Mansion Hosted WV Commissioner of Tourism

Amy S. Goodwin visited Adaland Mansion to discuss tourism’s impact on the WV economy and to visit the 1870 restored mansion. Adaland hosted this special event to showcase the mansion as a tourist attraction and to premier a new DVD which is used to market Adaland Mansion to the public.
The event that included remarks by the Commissioner, a preview of the DVD, and a light luncheon. This special event also gave those in the area who work with tourism the opportunity to meet Commissioner Goodwin and to discuss ideas with her. in addition it gave the Commissioner the opportunity to meet with people who draw visitors into Barbour County.

Receive WV Preservation Achievement Award
Adaland Mansion at Philippi and Dr. Ann Serafin, Executive Director of Adaland Mansion were recently honored by the Preservation Alliance of WV with the 2015 Preservation Achievement for a Building Project Award.
The 2015 award was presented to Dr. Ann Serafin for her tireless efforts to restore Philippi’s 1870 home, the latest restoration project being a repair of a bowing south wall at Adaland Mansion. This project restored historic masonry in the house’s south wall.
